The Great Pacific Garbage Heap

In the Pacific where two great currents converge resides a monster, made not of teeth and tentacles, but of pure garbage. The plastic flotsam and jetsam of dozens of countries.

Escaped refuse from the shores of the Americas, China, Australia and every other Pacific Rim nation. It�s all winding up smack dab in the center of the Pacific. Strewn across thousands of miles at depths ranging from surface level to hundreds of feet down.

The impact is being felt in bird populations where in some cases 40% of hatchlings are dying after ingesting plastic debris mistakenly picked up as food by their parents.

Wildlife observers are reporting large quantities of plastic being found in the stomachs of nearly every specimen pulled from the area.

The Central Pacific is the ocean equivalent of a desert. The impact isn�t quite as bad as it would be if the detritus were to collect in coastal waters. Still, we�ve managed to leave one heck of a mess in the community pool.

Cleanup is going to be a nightmare and possibly a multi-generational affair. Due to the size of the mess and nature of its distribution, conventional methods such as dredging or netting are out. (No one to cough up the money and no one to get the stuff hanging out in the depths.)

Sunlight and wave action does help to degrade the plastic. Unfortunately what is being seen as a result is not the decomposition of the waste but the same amount of waste in smaller pieces. The smaller pieces are easier for animals to eat and much harder to pick up should a cleanup effort ever be launched.

Where is it all coming from?

It is estimated that just from Los Angeles alone 10,000 pounds of plastic is making its way into the ocean each day. Multiply that by dozens of large population centers and hundreds of smaller ones!
It would be nice to point to one big bad polluter and say that they are the cause. We can�t do that. Guilt and blame for this one rests with every consumer and every manufacturer of plastic materials.

Short-term measures to stop the process include California�s ban on plastic bags and attempts to curtail the use of plastics in general.

My opinion is that this is a multi-national problem. That while California is awfully good at being an environmental leader, I don�t see the Japanese or the Chinese joining them in conservation efforts anytime soon.

It�s got to start with us. That means being zealous about recycling plastics, bringing your own cloth bags to the grocery stores, and requesting recycled products everywhere you go, even if you know they don�t have them.

A lot of little things can add up to big changes. For something this big it is going to take a lot of us working together to bring about change on a global-size problem like this one.

We�ll be watching this one.

HELLO FROM JAY,

I RECENTLY HAD A BAD ACCIDENT THAT WAS NOT MY FAULT. I ENDED UP BREAKING MY LEG BADLY ENOUGH THAT IT IS GOING TO BE MONTHS AND MONTHS AND A LOT OF EXTENSIVE PHYSICAL THERAPY TO REGAIN MY ORIGINAL SELF. I HAD TO HAVE A LONG SURGERY AND IN THE MEANTIME I AM ON MY BACK WITH THIS INJURY. I HAVE RENT AND FOOD FOR MY FAMILY TO PAY FOR AS WELL AS FOOD FOR MY ANIMALS. I HAVE A FAMILY OF FOUR ANd THREE ANIMALS. I ALSO HAVE UTILITIES AND I AM SURE MEDICAL BILLS, PAIN PILLS AND NUMEROUS OTHER BILLS TO PAY FOR. IF ANYONE COULD SEE IT IN THIER HEART TO HELP ME OUT WITH ANYTHING IT WOULD BE A GREAT SERVICE TO ME. ANYTHING AT ALL HELPS. EVEN JUST A DOLLAR. IF YOU COULD HELP ME OUT WITH MORE THEN THAT WOULD BE EVER SO APPRECIATED. THE HOLIDAYS ARE JUST AROUND THE CORNER AND I ALSO AM GOING TO BE IN NEED OF CHRISTMAS PRESENTS AND FOOD FOR THANKSGIVING. AM DESPERATELY IN NEED OF ANY HELP.

6) What is the type of government for the country?
7) What are the major religions? What are the basic beliefs of these religions?
8) What are the important holidays? Are there special observances of these holidays? Do you feel the attention to these holidays has changed in any way due to the effects of globalization?
